125 – 삼화사 Temple Bell

August 17, 2010

Here’s a pretty long sample of the giant bell being rung at 삼화사 (Samhwasa Temple) in 무릉계곡 (Mureung Valley) near the town of 동해 강원도 (Donghae, Gangwon Province).  I posted a bell like this a few months back, but this recording is a more authentic temple sound.  The monk is using the bell to signal that it is 6:30 (time for prayer?), and probably rang it over 30 times.  My original hope was to post a sample that was nearly 5 minutes in length, but a few hikers came by, stopped, and were talking quite loudly in front of me in the middle of my recording.  Still, you can get a good sense of what it was like.  (125 – Samhwasa Temple Bell)

Recorded 7/27/10, 6:38PM (local time)
