191 – Royal Court Music 6: 보허자 (Boheoja)

Part six of the ‘Sound of Heaven, Music of King Sejong’ concert at Gyeongbokgung Palace on May 28th.  This excerpt is an example of 보허자 (Boheoja) and is played (with accompanying dancers) during the third of five wine offerings.  The full recording here is a bit longer than most anything else on Seoul Sounds (around 10 minutes), but it’s interesting to hear the constant back-and-forth between the giant court orchestra and unaccompanied vocalists.  If you find that boring, I apologize, but you can always get a laugh at the young Korean kids who were sitting next to me and not-so-covertly trying to show off what they learned in English class.  (191 – Boheoja)

Recorded 5/28/11/, 4:38PM (local time)

*You can hear the rest of the concert here.
